Salsoul Records was established in 1974 by brothers Joseph, Kenneth, and Stanley Cayre. The label quickly earned a reputation for releasing and producing everlasting dance music classics. Partially inspired by Philadelphia soul, and Latin dance rhythms, Salsoul Records represented a new generation of charismatic artists. Names such as Joe Bataan, First Choice, and Instant Funk gave the label it's signature sound—a vibrant combination of salsa, soul, and disco music engineered for the dancefloor.
Salsoul had many hits in the 1970s but is historically known for releasing the first commercially available twelve-inch single, Double Exposure’s ‘Ten Percent.’ In addition, the label’s roster included classic recordings by Loleatta Holloway, Skyy, Carol Williams, Salsoul Orchestra, Inner Life, and Candido. Although Salsoul managed to remain in business until 1984, the label’s success was cut short by disco backlash in the late 1970s.
Revered by DJs and remixers alike, Salsoul’s catalog became the soundtrack of an emerging—and diverse—scene that embraced technical creativity. Many of these records have resurfaced in modern samples and remixes: proof of Salsoul’s enduring legacy and its crucial role in shaping the sound of dance music. Over half a decade, Salsoul Records reached commercial success while releasing long, inventive cuts that permanently altered the landscape of the music industry.
